The Council of Reforming Churches Pt. 2

The Council of Reforming Churches is a new broadly reformed network of churches dedicated to bringing the light of the reformation to the black church and black community. We exist to see biblically reformed theology sown, take root in, flourish among and eventually become the dominant theology within the black church and African-American community.

Now that’s a mouthful as well as a fairly ambitious agenda. Before we dive into our main hope and goal I’ll begin with what a ‘broadly reformed’ network of churches is. CRC consists of a number of churches and pastors who believed that the reformed theology best sums up and what Scriptures teaches about God, His word, mankind, the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, sin, salvation, the church, evangelism, worship etc. Now don’t switch the channel just because I used the dreaded ‘t’ word. Everyone you know has a theology. There is something we believe about God (even if we believe He doesn’t exist) if, how and what He’s communicated to His creation, Jesus Christ, humanity, sin, salvation etc. Our theology inevitably shapes our outlook on this existence and guides the pattern of our lives. The issue isn’t if you have a theology, but is your theology a biblical one.

The Council of Reforming Churches believes that reformed theology is simply biblical theology. That is, it’s what Scripture teaches regarding the nature of God, His word, His salvation in Jesus Christ, His people etc. What makes reformed theology different from other aspects of evangelical theology? Well that’s what we’re going to spend a good deal of time on at this site so you’ll want to check back frequently. For now, check out the writings and messages of the pastors on the site. Begin by listening to our brother Tony Carter’s message entitled ‘Why The Bible and Why Reformed Theology’. I’d encourage you to pay particular attention to the sermon series in Ephesians by our brother Thabiti Anybwile, www.fbc.org.ky It would also be worthwhile to listen to the messages from that same book by our brother Reddit Andrews by going to his church’s website, www.soaringoaks.org. In the next few weeks I’ll post two sermons that speak to some of the core issues of reformed theology. ‘Saved by Grace’ is a message that was preached on Reformation Day at Christ Liberation Fellowship. This message outlines the doctrines of grace concerning how God saves His people in Christ and through the Spirit’s power. ‘A Theology for the City’ was preached that same day but in the evening service of historic Tenth Presbyterian Church. That message focused on the five solas of the reformation.

One word of warning. You really are entering the matrix. Much that you’ve heard, thought and learned about Christianity will be challenged and will change. Our goal is not to fill your head with useless theology, but to teach Scriptures in such a way that your mind is truly transformed so that with all your heart you begin to follow our Lord by the way of the cross. As stated previously our goal while simple is ambitious. We will not rest until biblically reformed theology is sown, takes root in, flourishes among and becomes the dominant theology within the African-American church and community. So are you ready to enter the matrix?
